Our name, Aroha, in Māori means “to love, to feel compassion, and to empathise.”

Big Aroha Winery & Shuttle Tours  is owned and operated by locals husband and wife, Darren and Jane. We offer a unique insight into the heart of Waiheke. We pride ourselves in our Manaakitanga (hospitality serves) and share the stories of our ancestors and their love for our earth, sea and forests.

Darren, the Māori Artist

Darren is a Māori Artist, and has worked in the Taxi industry for 5 years on the Island. He understands the joy and positive energy visitors bring to the Island. Darren is passionate about sharing his Māori and English colonial heritage.  “I am Māori, I am Kiwi, I know who I am on both sides. We’re upholding memories. When it comes to our tours, I will tell the stories of our ancestors and I will have that energy, that wairua (spirit)”.

Jane, the teacher

Jane is an early child teacher of 25yrs. She values the Māori concept of whanaungatanga. “I want our visitors to feel a sense of connectedness when they experience Big Aroha Tours”. She will also be your first contact when making your bookings or enquiries. She can tell you about our fun, informative, culturally rich and unforgettable tours!

OUR TOUR GUIDES

Big Aroha Tours endeavour to select guides who will endorse our commitment to excellence. These people are special. They will inform, teach and share knowledge in a manner that is respectful and friendly.

Fabulous, Fun.. Friendly.... Memory making
What a great team.. myself and friends called on Jane and Darren not only for a tour but as our taxi service.. Always going above and beyond expectations. Our day tour was customised for my friends and myself, indulging in Pizza at the beach, enjoying the wine and not feeling rushed..all wrapped up with ice creams as laughed the day away.. Jane and Darren both share so much knowledge and Aroha for the island.. I’m suggesting you guys to all my family ans friends! Thank you.

Fallen in love with Waiheke
Our small group of 5 ladies had the best wine tour experience with Jane. She took us to places for lunch and some extra olive oil tastings which were beautiful. Janes local knowledge was invaluable and by the end of the day it felt like she was one of the girls. Highly recommend this relaxed style of seeing the beauty that Waiheke Island has to offer.

Birthday weekend
Darren and Jane are great. Jane picked us up from the ferry when we arrived and then took us back there when we were to leave. Comfortable vans for traveling. Darren then took us on a tour of the island. We didn't want to do the touristy thing so he gave us a tour from a residents point of view. There was 5 of us in our party. Great tour guide, friendly people who have lived on the island for over 15 years....Jane even longer, reasonable prices....what more could u ask for..

Fantastic company and very helpful
Darren and his team were fantastic, they shuttled us all around the island from the minute we got to the ferry to the end. Every time we rang them to pick us up they were there. Great laughs with Darren when he was driving us and his work mate with the pink hat. Really recommend using them even if it’s just to get shuttled around and you don’t do one of the tours. I will definitely be ringing them when I go back to Waiheke.
